Safe communities for all can only be achieved if we move from border security to human security. Hadrian's Walls and Maginot Lines designed to keep “the Enemy” out only create it within. “Fortress Britain” or “Fortress Europe” only dehumanise us and the values we claim to defend in the first place. Human security starts at home - in our neighborhoods, our communities, our schools, our public spaces. It then extends across national and international borders to those who live in distant lands but who are now just a mouse click or a plane flight away. Unless we extend our arc of caring to them also, and make sure they too, can live safely in their own communities, and benefit from the same opportunities we do, no amount of border security and surveillance measures will protect us from tragedy and violence.
